A North Yorkshire night of luxury

by LifeLoveLaura on March 6, 2014

A few weeks ago Big T and I enjoyed a night at the very swish Rudding Park, just outside of Harrogate. I had heard of Rudding Park from my wedding blog days, I featured a wedding there! But I had never been until a few weeks ago and boy is it good. Little T shacked up for the night with my mother in law so Big T and I could enjoy some baby free time but the trip was really to celebrate my dad’s retirement. It was actually a surprise for my dad, he knew him and my mum were going but he didn’t expect to see Big T and I, along with a couple of their friends, waiting in the bar area when they arrived. Dad was very happy to see us!

When we got there we went straight to the bar (where else?) and waited for my dad who we knew wasn’t far behind us as I rang my mum to check where they were just before we got there. It was a race against time to arrive before dad saw us, it’s just my luck for him to see us in the car park! Fortunately we got a table just before he turned up. We were sitting next to a young couple who were obviously planning their wedding, bless ‘em! As soon as mum and dad got there we ordered some lunch. I had a smoked chicken sandwich, everyone else had “Yorkshire tapas” which consisted of pork pie, cheeses, honey and mustard sausages (which were YUM!) and fresh bread, amongst other things – my kind of tapas! Not gonna lie, I did eat my sandwich then dig into theirs.

After lunch Big T and I checked in and went for a quick snoop around the hotel. It was a dream! In fact, if we ever won the lottery it’s pretty much how my house would be decorated. Just look at the amount of dog artwork, massive fireplace in the lobby, bright colours and the roll top bath! Jealous. The sitting room was my absolute favourite room, I’d kill for a book nook like that. Although I’d also kill for the time to read these days…

Beautiful eh? We stayed in the Follifoot wing and our room was stunning. Big T and I loved everything about the place, it was so nice to get away somewhere different and appreciate it. Before dinner we chilled out in our room, this was when I was a teeny bit disappointed that the hotel didn’t have a pool, I would’ve been all over it! Instead I took the opportunity to put the Molton Brown to good use and had a loooong soak in the roll top bath, something I’m not able to do that often any more! When I was pregnant I loved a nice cosy candlelit bath but I had to kiss goodbye to those when Little T arrived, there just don’t seem to be enough hours in the day.

Dinner time at the hotel’s Clocktower soon came and we were ready for it. We started off with a few cocktails, it was a celebratory dinner after all! I was also mightily impressed with the huge purple chandelier donning the ceiling (can I have the number for the interior designer ready for my lottery win?).

I managed to sneak a cheeky photo of my Woo Woo. That sounds rude, it’s not, it was the name of my cocktail. The restaurant, however, wasn’t the “let me Instagram my food before I dig in” sort of restaurant so sadly I didn’t get any pics of my dinner but my mouth is watering now at the thought of it. I ordered the 8oz fillet steak with skinny chips, garlic & thyme tomato, field mushroom and peppercorn sauce. That peppercorn sauce was TO DIE FOR.

I’m not one to sit around the dinner table chatting, I’m more of a ‘grub done, pjs on’ type of girl so come around 11pm I retired to bed to watch TV and take the opportunity to have some more Little T free chill out time. The bed was HUGE, we might as well have been sleeping on separate beds which I loved. At home we have a small double bed that we not only share with each other but a Labrador and a cat so having lots of empty bed space was an added luxury for us! Big T was snoring away as soon as his head hit the pillow. I actually ended up watching the second half of Braveheart on Film4 and kind of related to his “freedooooooommm!”

In the morning, after a very tasty full English breakfast (with my standard extra beans) we went for a walk in the grounds. It was a beautiful day and the hotel’s church looked very pretty in the sun. They were preparing it for a wedding later on that afternoon. We knew this because the wedding party, complete with fur coats and ladies with hair in rollers, were checking in as we were checking out. Oh to have those excited wedding morning feelings again!

Spot the Daisy

We had a quick peek around the cute little church in the grounds, obviously where the couple were getting married that afternoon as we bumped into the florists trying to battle with the wind in keeping the fixtures attached to the door archway. Rather them than me, it looked like a tricky job! The church was beautiful inside with some very intricate stone carvings, I even spotted a little Daisy near the alter! I would’ve loved to hang around for the wedding itself but frankly that would’ve been proper creepy so instead we head into Harrogate for a bit of retail therapy. I was very happy to see a JoJo Maman Bebe for Little T. Gone are the days of shopping for myself!

Thank you for having us Rudding Park, I’d love to say we will be back soon but this was a very special treat. On the other hand, when we can be back we will be!

What a lovely post! That hotel looks amazing, so quirky and different – modern yet traditional. I love it! x
